Ukraine
The Danube forms Ukraines southern border to Romania from east of the mouth of the river Prut to the Black Sea (170 km). North of the Kilia branch of the Danube the Ukraine also has a smaller share in the Danube delta, which due to its wildlife and scenic beauty is one of the worlds finest natural attractions. The Kilia branch is navigable, although the main navigation route uses the Romanian Sulina branch. On the Ukrainian bank of the Danube, Izmaïl is the largest town and river port. Over millennia the Danube River has formed Europe's largest floodplain and delta, a diverse landscape of alluvial islands, marshes, reed beds, canals and lakes. It also holds the distinction of being among Europes largest wetlands. About 20 % of the delta, an area of approximately 125,000 hectares, occurs in Ukraine. Of this, 75,000 hectares comprise land while the remaining 50,000 is water. Scenic forests along the riverbanks form a contrast with the lakes and reed beds that dominate the delta.
