The most modernized form of folk music in Serbia is novokomponovana narodna muzika or Turbo-Folk, which is a best-selling genre today. Novokomponovana is a result of the urbanization of folk music. In its early times, it had a more traditional approach to performance and used traditional instruments like accordion and clarinet but became more and more electronized since the 1970s. The genre typically includes love songs or other simple lyrics. Pop music in Serbia as well as rock has been catching up with the popularity of folk in recent years.
